Childbirth is the most humbling, empowering and ennobling thing any person can do. It can also be a fantastically satisfying and soul stretching thing. It is also possibly the hardest thing a woman will do, but the reward is bliss.
My Philosophy
I believe that if a woman is encouraged to trust her body, her baby and the birth process and is supported in her efforts, childbirth goes much smoother.
I believe that a woman knows intuitively what is best for her and her baby and if she is given respect and space she will figure things out. My job is to aid her in getting the best information there is and to help her implement her knowledge as well as to support her physically, psychologically, emotionally and intellectually and to empower her to trust and work with birth.
I believe that when supported any woman can have a natural birth and that the ultimate in the birth experience is homebirth, where the baby is born into the loving and waiting arms of its parents and family.
I believe that the baby is an integral part of the birth process and actively works to facilitate its birth and that there are things the woman can do to aid the baby in its efforts.
I believe that the baby needs to be treated with respect, kindness and gentleness. I believe that the mother is best able to give a healthy newborn the best care and attention. I am also a proponent of breastfeeding and will work to help that process go well.
I believe that nutrition is vital – almost a magic bullet – to the health of mother and baby through the childbearing year. Nutrition can help, if not prevent, most of the common complications of pregnancy. I also have knowledge of essential oils, homeopathics and herbs.
I believe in empowering the father and making him an integral part of the birth experience and that the bonds that can be forged with the baby and the mother through his active participation are life changing.
I believe in open communication and working together to make birth the best experience possible. I prefer to do prenatal appoints in the woman’s home, when possible.
I believe that my role is to be a lifeguard of safe birth, and that in the event that something looks unhealthy or unsafe, it is my responsibility to inform the parents and make changes that will facilitate a great outcome. Sometimes that means a change of venue and in that event I am grateful for doctors and hospitals.
About Me
I have been married for 35 years to my wonderful supportive husband. I have 7 children – 6 born at home – and 11 grandchildren, 8 of whom I had the blessing of catching. I have been a midwife for 17 years and have attended around 300 births either as the primary midwife, assistant or doula. I graduated from Utah Association of Community Midwives in 1997. I am a former Bradley Childbirth Education teacher prior to becoming a midwife, and I have worked as a doula. I understand hypnosis for birth and have seen it work miraculously, even for first time mothers.
I live in Nephi, Utah but have attended births as far north as Logan and as far south as Cedar City.
There is no greater and important work than helping women and their families bring these precious spirits into the world. I love midwifery.
